Educating and Empowering Muslims to Plan their Assets

On 15 July 2009, a Minister, a CEO, and a High Commissioner, together with 94 other Muslim professionals, gathered with a common purpose- “to educate and empower Muslims to plan the accumulation and distribution of their assets in accordance with the Syariah Principles.”

Educating and Empowering Muslims to Plan their AssetsThe “Wills, Inheritence & Estate Planning - The Islamic Perspective” conference was organized by LexisNexis Singapore and hosted by the newly-formed Muslim Financial Planning Association (MFPA).The MFPA was also officially launched by Guest-of-Honour Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister of Environment and Water Resources and Minister in charge of Muslim Affairs.

LexisNexis was pleased to play a part in promoting the development of best practices in the Islamic Financial industry through its education programmes and range of publications.

MFPA’s President, Mrs Arafat Selvam defined her organization as a “not for profit organization led by a team of professionals dedicated towards the development and sharing of knowledge of estate planning, from an Islamic perspective.”

Educating and Empowering Muslims to Plan their Assets In her opening address to the conference delegates, Mrs Selvam noted the relevance of such an event: “We live in a multi-religious society. We have to be familiar with so many intricate rules on estate planning. While there is abundant literature on the distribution of estates for non-Muslims, there is unfortunately a dearth of authoritative literature on the planning and distribution of estates of Muslims.”

And it is that dearth of authority that these professionals are seeking to mitigate. The conference saw prominent individuals such as Halijah Mohamad, Sole Proprietor of Halijah Mohamad & Co and Shamim Dhilawala, Legal Director of a US Multinational, address a range of issues including HDB Joint Tenancy and CPF Nomination, which often find themselves in the middle of a tug-of war between civil law and Shariah law.

Pointing to the future direction of MFPA’s role in the Muslim community, Mrs Selvam said: “For subsequent conferences, we plan to present on topics such as the distribution of insurance moneys. Our events will all be designed towards bringing clarity on financial and estate planning for the Muslim public.”

Indeed, the day’s event was just a prelude of future enlightening chapters which the Muslim Community in Singapore can come to expect from the MFPA.

LexisNexis Solves Murder Case

A lifeless body on the table, gun in hand. An entry wound. An exit wound. Blood stains the dead man’s starch white shirt. A shriek of horror from the maid as she discovers her master, dead. People surround the dead man, brows furrowed, as they seek answers to this gory crime.

A scene out of an episode of CSI Miami? Not quite.

This was one of Singapore Management University’s (SMU) School of Law 2009 First Year Students Orientation Camp activities- the Murder Mystery. Think board game Cluedo come alive.

As 21st July 2009 dawned, 18 LexisNexis staff donned their red “LexisNexis Cares” t-shirts and made their way to SMU’s School of Law to join its incoming First Year Students as they socialized, bonded and familiarized themselves with this strange new place they were about to call home for the next four years.

In true Sherlock Holmes style, the LexisNexis staff, working as a team with the students, interrogated the suspects, poked around the crime scene for clues, then huddled in circles as they tried to put together the jig-saw pieces of the crime.

Perhaps some of their crime-solving skills didn’t quite live up to the Sherlock Holmes comparison but it is no exaggeration that at the end of two hours of detective work, LexisNexis was no longer merely the publisher of “tedious legal textbooks” and the provider of a “boring online database” (of which these students were to spend an intimate four years with). It was now a corporation with a face and a heart, which, most importantly, liked to do “fun stuff”.

As Terence Lim, Managing Editor of LexisNexis Singapore said in his opening address to the freshmen, “We wanted you to meet some of the people behind the information, solutions, and news. On our part, it was an opportunity not to be missed, to get in touch with our future customers, partners, and also just to get out of the office on a Tuesday morning.”

First Year Student and camp participant Devathas Satianathan said: “The gracious presence of the individuals from LexisNexis provided us (SMU Law students) with a very human face to the solutions provider which we will be depending on for bailouts from academic conundrums in the coming years. The (LexisNexis) team was forthcoming and extremely enthusiastic, as epitomised by the representative in my group whose uninhibited and well expressed intellectual curiosity crystallised the effort of the twelve of us during the game. We are extremely grateful not just for the sumptuous and satisfying meal they kindly paid for, but the generous companionship they provided throughout the experience.”

With its generous scholarships, internship opportunities and sponsorships of various school events such as this and last year’s First Year Students Orientation Camps, LexisNexis has proven itself to be a loyal supporter of SMU’s School of Law since the School’s inception in 2007.

LexisNexis does care. Indeed, this is the relationship it enjoys with its partners - publisher of a Criminal Law textbook one day, team mate on a crime-solving mission the next.
